Professor Michael Lanzer

The malaria group of Michael Lanzer has a long history on studies related to the biology and pathogenicity of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. Important contributions to the field include: i) the generation of YAC clones and cloning of entire P. falciparum and P. vivax chromosomes; ii) the genomic mapping of var genes; iii) functional knock-outs of var genes; iv) the identification of the STEVOR gene family in P. falciparum and the vir gene family in P. vivax; v) transfection of P. vivax; demonstration that polymorphisms within PfMDR1 affects the substrate specificity of this transporter for antimalarial drugs. Recently, they have begun to investigate the mechanisms underpinning sorting and trafficking of P. falciparum-encoded proteins to destinations within the host erythrocyte. Other work conducted by the laboratory includes the investigation of the modes of action of antimalarial drugs and drug resistance mechanisms.
